TENDER SUN
Art by Katrina Bello
December 2023-January 2024 in The Hive (2nd Floor). Opening reception December 21st, 5-6pm.
Alluvion Arts @ 414 in partnership with the Tusen Takk Channel present Tender Sun, an exhibition of works on paper by fall 2023 artist-in-residence Katrina Bello. While at Tusen Takk, Bello found inspiration in the colors and geological history of the Northern Michigan landscape, considering themes of migration, time, and place in this body of work. Created one per day while in residence, these works became like journal entries–the artist’s effort to remember, honor, and imagine the landscape.
While Bello’s previous work stays comfortably within a grayscale palette–tones familiar to her as a child raised on the black sand beaches of the Philippines–her residency unearthed a newfound joy in color. The subtle yet vibrant hues of the sky, water, and stones made their way into her studio where she created work in response to the colors and textures both seen and unseen (as she continues to chase sight of the northern lights). As the artist ruminated on Barry Lopez’s Arctic Dreams, the rich history of northern Michigan's stones, and the narratives that they embody, also influenced the work: “You can sit for a long time with the history of man like a stone in your hand.”

“Hold Your Earth”
This video is an imagination of the cosmic sources that make up planet Earth. The video embedded on the rock is credited to L. Calçada/European Southern Observatory, and the rock is a piece of shale from the Pine Plains area of upstate New York that I carved so it snugly fits into the contours of one’s left palm.
“Sky Into Stone”
The video is one of the results of my ongoing interest and readings on theories about the ingredients that led to the formation of Earth.
Please join us from 5-6pm on Thursday, December 21st for a reception in Commongrounds. Katrina will also be speaking during the evening’s jazz performance by the Jeff Haas Trio featuring Laurie Sears, in a solstice-themed set. Learn more about Katrina Bello at the artist’s website
