About Bob James:
The career of Bob James is long, varied and continues to evolve at every turn. From his first days in Marshall, Missouri, the music of Bob James has captivated audiences throughout the world.Discovered by Quincy Jones at the Notre Dame Jazz Festival in 1963, James recorded his first solo album,Bold Conceptions, that year for Mercury Records. 58 albums and innumerable awards would follow through five decades. He honed his skills working with Creed Taylor, working on albums for artists like Hank Crawford, Grover Washington, Jr, among others.While with CTI, James found great popular success overseeing significant hits for Paul Simon, Neil Diamond, Maynard Ferguson, and Kenny Loggins.In 1974, James finally recorded his own album,One, which launched a lifelong career of recording and performing live. After three more albums, James began his own label, Tappan Zee Records.This allowed James to spend more time in the studio, focusing on his own creative works.It was during this time that he recorded his own gold seller,Touchdown, which included his composition, “Angela”, the instrumental theme from the sitcomTaxi, and possibly James’ best know work.Bob composed all the original music used in that television series for its entire run.One On One, the first in three collaborations with Earl Klugh, was awarded a Grammy in 1980 for Best Pop Instrumental Performance, and has sold over a million copies. During this time, James set the standard for the smooth jazz sound in the late 1970s.
While James is recognized as one of the progenitors ofsmooth jazz, his music has also had a profound effect on the history ofhip hop, having been sampled often. Two of James’ songs –“Nautilus” from 1974’sOneand “Take Me to the Mardi Gras” from 1975’sTwo–are among the mostsampledinhip hophistory. According to whosampled.com, “Nautilus” and “Take Me to Mardi Gras” have been sampled in thirty-two and forty-three hip-hop recordings, respectively.The title track from his 1981 albumSign of the Timeswas sampledinDe La Soul‘s “Keepin’ the Faith”, andWarren G‘s “Regulate”.His “Angela” was sampled in the track “Cab Fare” bySouls of Mischief.The track “El Verano” from the 1977 album “BJ4” is used as a sample in the song “Blown Away” by theCocoa Brovazand also in theMasta AceTrack “NY Confidential”.N.W.A‘s “Alwayz into Somethin'” uses a sample of “Storm King” from the albumThree.“Can’t Wait” byRedmanfeatures a sample of “Caribbean Nights” from the albumTouchdown.English Drum & Bass pioneer Adam F extensively sampled “Westchester Lady” on his 1995 breakthrough releaseCircles.Röyksoppsampled his version of “You’re as Right as Rain” for their instrumental track “Eple.” In addition, James is mentioned ina verse byAndré 3000on “Black Ice” from Goodie Mob’s second album Still Standing.

About Dave Koz:
who received a 2023 Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award from President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, was born and raised in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley. He initially saw the saxophone as a way togain entry into his big brother’s band. What began as a ploy became a lifelong obsession. After graduating from UCLA with a degree in mass communications, Koz decided to become a professional musician. Within weeks of that decision, he was recruited as a touring member of singer Bobby Caldwell’s (“What You Won’t Do For Love”) band. It was during this time that Koz befriended keyboardist Jeff Lorber, who invited Koz to play on one of his tours. That stint was followed by a 14-month tour with pop singer Richard Marx.Signed to Capitol Records by Bruce Lundvall in 1987, Koz released his self-titled solo debut album in the fall of 1990. This was the first installment in a large body of best-selling work, which includes the Gold-certified Lucky Man(1993), Off the Beaten Path(1996) and the holiday-themed albums December Makes Me Feel This Way(1997) and Dave Koz & Friends: A Smooth Jazz Christmas (2001). His Gold-certified fifth album, The Dance(1999), spawned no less than five Top 5 contemporary jazz hits. Saxophonic (2003) produced another four Top 5 singles and garnered two GRAMMY®nominations in two consecutive years.
Koz, the recipient of the 2023 Starlight Children’s Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award, has served as global ambassador for the foundation for 30 years. With help from his fans, he has raised over two million dollars for Starlight through the Dave Koz &Friends At Sea cruise silent auction.He has collaborated with many artists over the years, including Burt Bacharach, Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, Celine Dion, Stevie Wonder, Barry Manilow, Valerie Simpson, Gloria Estefan, Luther Vandross, Shelby Lynne, Kenny Loggins, U2, Michael McDonald, Rod Stewart and The Foo Fighters. Healso hosts two radio programs: The Dave Koz Radio Showand The Dave Koz Lounge, which appears on SiriusXM Watercolors and airs nationally every Sunday. Koz completed a four-year termon the GRAMMY®Foundation Artists Committee and has served as National Trustee for the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS). In 2024, he received an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from the Christian Bible Institute for his humanitarian efforts.In over 30 years of constant touring, Koz has graced the stages of some of the most prestigious venues the world over, including Royal Albert Hall in London, Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, Carnegie Hall in New York and various symphony orchestras across the country. Koz also headlines The Hollywood Bowl every other Summer season as one of the legendary venue’s “regulars.”“Music has been such a blessing to me, and we need it more than ever today,” Koz says about his remarkable career.
