The Alluvion presents the one and only Howard Levy (a founding member of Bela Fleck and The Flecktones) and his fresh, energetic, spontaneous, adventurous new band: The Howard Levy 4

A dynamic, multi-styled band from Chicago featuring the Grammy-Award winning diatonic harmonica master, pianist and composer Howard Levy, the incomparable guitarist Chris Siebold, the outstanding upright and electric bassist Joshua Ramos, and the exceptional Brazilian drummer Luiz Ewerling. This powerhouse ensemble delivers pure musical magic in a range of styles that includes Jazz, Latin, World Music, and Blues. Besides several distinctively reworked American and Brazilian compositions, the band has an astonishingly diverse repertoire of original compositions that combine and blend many cultures, rhythms and genres, creating a sonic experience that's nothing short of extraordinary.

Sounding like no other on stage, Howard’s unparalleled harmonica playing and virtuosic, lyrical pianism creates a 1-2 punch, effortlessly alternating between instruments and sometimes blending the two in wild and unexpected ways. The Chicago Tribune says, “As Art Tatum was to the piano, so is Levy to the harmonica: a hyper-virtuoso whose feats can be admired and studied but never really replicated.” And Jazz Times notes, “Although he cites McCoy Tyner and Herbie Hancock as influences, Levy the pianist has a sunnier, more ebullient style than either, enlivened by an unfailing upward momentum...”

Chris, house guitarist for A Prairie Home Companion for four years, has recorded and toured with Chicago’s most eclectic Jazz and fusion groups; Joshua, one of Chicago’s most in-demand bassists, spent five years with jazz legend Ramsey Lewis, while drummer/composer Luiz contributes rhythmic and compositional fire and depth to The Howard Levy 4.

The band’s live performance is full of unbridled energy and spirit, an auditory feast that transcends genres and captivates the soul, as showcased in their newly released EP “Live from Chicago”.

HOWARD LEVY - HARMONICA + PIANO

Howard Levy, two- time Grammy Award Winner (Pop Music Performance and Instrumental Composition) is an acknowledged master of the diatonic harmonica, a superb pianist, innovative composer, educator and producer. At the age of 19, he discovered how to play the diatonic harmonica as a fully chromatic instrument by developing techniques on it that had never existed before. This enabled Howard to take the harmonica out of its usual role as a Folk and Blues instrument, and into the worlds of Jazz, Classical, Middle Eastern music, and more. His discovery unlocked infinite possibilities for the harmonica world.

LUIZ EWERLING - DRUMS

Born in1958 in Southern Brazil, Luiz Ewerling grew up surrounded by music, his father Olmiro being a choral singer and also a music lover. At six years old, Luiz had his first contact with a drum set, and after two years of dedicated practice, he made his first television appearance. At that time, people began calling him "The Mini Drummer".

After several years of touring the club circuits and Jazz festivals, Luiz began to take on students for private study. This ultimately led to the development of his Brazilian drum clinics out of a desire to hone serious drummers in the art of Brazilian Samba rhythms. In 1984 Luiz's reputation as an accomplished drummer had grown to a point where a move to the United States was realized when he was invited to join the Chicago-based Som Brasil.
