About the artists:

JOSHUA REDMAN - SAXOPHONE

Joshua Redman is one of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artists to have emerged in the 1990’s. Born in Berkeley, California he is the son of legendary saxophonist Dewey Redman and dancer Renee Shedroff. In 1991 Redman graduated from Harvard College summa cum laude and had already been accepted by Yale Law School, but deferred entrance for what he believed was only going to be one year. Instead, he moved to New York City and immediately found himself immersed in the city’s burgeoning jazz scene. Five months later Redman was named winner of the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition. Since then, Redman has worked and played with a vast array of jazz luminaries, released over twenty albums (Warner & Nonesuch), and has garnered top honors in critics and readers polls of DownBeat, Jazz Times, The Village Voice and Rolling Stone. GABRIELLE CAVASSA - VOCALS

Gabrielle Cavassa is an American vocalist-composer of Italian descent who is garnering attention for her distinctive voice and intimate expression. She was crowned a winner of the International Sarah Vaughan Jazz Vocal Competition in 2021 after the independent release of her critically acclaimed debut album. Cavassa is featured on celebrated saxophonist Joshua Redman’s inaugural album with Blue Note Records, ‘where are we’, released September 2023.

Cavassa’s relationship with music began with an early love for records. She remembers “obsessively listening” to albums at an early age and later amassed a record collection through which she began her education in music. Born and raised in Escondido, California, Cavassa moved to San Francisco to attend San Francisco State University in 2012. There, she began her career as a vocalist , crediting the Bay Area music scene as having a significant influence on her development. In 2017, Cavassa moved to New Orleans where she would work alongside and become inspired by the city’s most influential voices.

Shimmering in her own humanness, Cavassa’s expression contains a vulnerability that reaches at the crux of our humanity. Her songwriting and interpretation explore moods of sensuality, melancholy, and humor, as though she is reading from a diary. Read more on her website
