Building Bridges with Music has outdone themselves once again this year to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
On Monday, January 15th at 7:00pm, MLK will be celebrated in a special FREE ‘one show, two venue’ extravaganza at The Alluvion AND Milliken Auditorium. The program will feature the acclaimed musical and literary masterpiece inspired by the life and times of legendary poet, Phillis Wheatley, performed by composer Marion Hayden and her Detroit all-star octet. PLUS, NMC Cantus Children’s Choir and Chamber Singers, PLUS SkyeLea Martin, Jimmy Olson, Joe Wilson & Kevin Larose. You choose your preferred venue. Either way you see the whole show!
PLUS, all day free events at Commongrounds including: interactive art and music for pre-schoolers & elementary and a FREE COMMUNITY LUNCH from 12-2 pm at the newly opened NoBo Mrkt. All MLK activities are sponsored by Building Bridges with Music.
Community MLK Day Celebration at Commongrounds:
● All day: StoryWalk® in the Hive: Walk through the building to enjoy Martin’s Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by Doreen Rappaport (author) and Bryan Collier (illustrator) and All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold with the whole family.
● 10-10:45am: Music for Kids in The Alluvion - Ms. Miriam will lead a music class perfect for Kindergarten and younger with their grownups with stories about MLK
● 11-11:45am: Art for Kids in The Alluvion - Laura Adams will offer creative reflections about MLK with art-making stations for 1st-5th graders
● 12-2pm: Free Community Lunch at Nobo Mrkt - Building Bridges with Music invites everyone to a free community lunch in TC’s newest restaurant.
● Spirituals: Listen for Kevin LaRose on Tuba and Joe Wilson on Dobro playing spiritual throughout the building.
● 6-6:30pm: SkyeLea and Jimmy Olson in The Hive (The Alluvion Lobby)
● 6:30pm: Doors to The Alluvion open for the day’s final showcase: Marion Hayden’s Ocean Suite
● 7-9pm Marion Hayden’s Ocean: The Life and Times of Poet, Phillis Wheatley with NMC choirs and SkyeLea with Jimmy from The Alluvion AND Milliken Auditorium.
