WHEE3TRIO FEAT GILAD HEKSELMAN

The WHEE3TRIO is led by drummer Andy Wheelock who is joined by some of the Front Ranges most accomplished, exciting, and in demand musicians. Venezuelan bassist, Gonzalo Teppa and Colorado pianist, Walter Gorra join Michigan native, now Wyoming resident Wheelock, for a unique and exciting exploration of Jazz infused with Afro-Latin, West African, and pop flavors. Each member brings their own highly regarded experiences as band leaders and composers, but when the three joined forces for this project, the joy of friendship and total trust allowed the music to take on a life all its own.

They are joined by world renowned guitarist, Gilad Hekselman, who’s inspiring contributions to each composition, make for an unforgettable sound.

ANDY WHEELOCK

Andy is a founding member of the WHEE3TRIO, the Live Edge Trio, KEWO, and can be heard playing regularly with the Gonzalo Teppa Quintet, Ben Markley, New Stream Brass Ensemble, the University of Wyoming Jazz Faculty, and the Cheyenne Symphony. Wheelock has had the honor of sharing the stage with Bill O’Connell, Steve Nelson, Adam Birnbaum, Henry Linarez, Terrel Stafford, Ernie Watts, Craig Handy, Jorge Alabe, SK Kakraba, Jorge Glem, Bobby Shew, Chuchito Valdés, Joel Frahm, Bob Bowman, Ivan Trevino, and William Moersch.

As a composer and arranger, Wheelock writes regularly for his own recording projects as well as big bands, percussion ensembles, Samba Bateria’s, and Pan-Afro-Latin Ensembles. His second record as a leader with the WHEE3TRIO received outstanding reviews including “a joyfully hypnotic listening experience” by Dan McClenaghan at All About Jazz.

As a clinician and adjudicator, Wheelock has been a guest artist at Boise State, Ohio State University, Central Michigan University, Friends University, Colorado Mesa University, Columbus State University, Interlochen School for the Arts, Washburn, Hope College, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Wichita State, Casper College, and the University of Illinois.  

Wheelock currently serves as the Director of Jazz Studies and Percussion area coordinator at the University of Wyoming where he directs the Wyoming Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combos, Samba Bateria, Pan-Afro-Latin Drumming group, and the UWYO Percussion Ensemble.

GILAD HEKSELMAN

Gilad Hekselman is one of the leading voices in jazz guitar. Born in Israel and based in New York, he tours globally as a bandleader, and has shared the stage with some of the greatest artists in jazz including Chris Potter, Eric Harland, Fred Hersch, Mark Turner, Anat Cohen, Ari Hoenig, Esperanza Spalding, Jeff Ballard, Ben Wendel, Gretchen Parlato, Ben Williams, Avishai Cohen, Tigran Hamasyan, Aaron Parks and Becca Stevens among many others.

Across eleven critically acclaimed albums, Gilad has built a rich discography noted both for his original compositions and captivating instrumental voice.

Since his arrival in New York as a student in 2004, Gilad has become a fixture in the city’s jazz scene, conducting residencies and performing at legendary venues including the Village Vanguard, the Blue Note, Dizzy's, Smalls, and the Jazz Standard. In addition, he has played at renowned jazz festivals both in the U.S. and internationally, including Montreux, North Sea, Montreal, and SFJazz, to name a few.

Gilad is the recipient of multiple prestigious recognitions and awards. In 2018, he was asked by Pat Metheny to perform as part of the legendary guitarist’s NEA Award ceremony at The Kennedy Center. In 2017 and 2022, Gilad placed first in the Rising Star category of Downbeat Magazine. That same year, he won the 7 Virtual Jazz Club International Contest. In 2005, Gilad won theGibson Montreux International Guitar Competition, which led to a string of performances including opening for guitar legend Paco de Lucia with his trio at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2006.

GONZALO TEPPA

Bassist Gozalo Teppa is a 2 time Latin Grammy Nominee  for “Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album” and “Best Latin Jazz Album”, for work on the recordings “Tiempo” by Linda Briceño; and “3rd Element” by Luisito Quintero.

He was named “Best Jazz Soloist” by Downbeat Magazine in 2004, 2005, and 2006. Gonzalo has performed with: Wynton Marsalis, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Matt Wilson, Ed Simon, Chris Potter, Tom Harrell, Ron Miles, Art Lande, Slide Hampton, Don Byron, Jeremy Pelt, Ben Goldberg, and others.

WALTER GORRA

Walter Gorra is an award-winning pianist, composer and arranger based out of the New York/New Jersey metro area. Currently 28 years old, Walter graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder Magna Cum Laude and High Honors in May 2017 with the following three degrees – MS Structural engineering, BM Jazz Piano and BS Civil Engineering. He then pursued a master’s degree in Jazz Composition and Arranging at William Paterson University in New Jersey, graduating in May 2019.

Walter has worked with Billy Childs, Rufus Reid, Pete McGuinness, Ingrid Jensen, Dave Douglas, Bill Charlap, and Harold Mabern, to name a few. Walter has performed with various ensembles at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola-Jazz at Lincoln Center, Ravinia Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Festival, the Puerto Rico Heineken Jazz Festival, the Telluride Jazz Festival with the Telluride All-Stars and at the Five Points Festival in Denver. His compositions have won first rate awards. “Jazongo,” the third cut on “In Due Time’ earned a 2014 ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer’s Award. In 2018 his original composition "Bandwidth" was the Downbeat Student Music Awards Graduate Winner. In the performance category, he collaborated with the Mariela Versola Quartet winning the Latin Group – Graduate College 2019 Downbeat Student Music Award.

Most recently, Walter was one of 15 Fellows invited to participate in the 2019 Ravinia's Steans Music Institute, Program for Jazz. All 15 fellows write original music in the program and they rehearse with a variety of individuals, learning how to perform well with changing personnel. He has been invited back for upcoming performances as part of a selection of 5 Alumni Fellows.
