Mixed media, cyanotype patches over copper plate print

“The collection I have created for the Long Memory Project is inspired by stories of elder 2SLGBTQIA+ folks that have not been able to share their life experiences; whilst creating art to emphasize all of the work that has been done before us and all of the work that has to be done for the future. I was most inspired by the moments of being in your body for the first time after self acceptance and the power that comes from it. I was also inspired by the way platonic and romantic love had carried through the lives of the elders. Using these main inspiration points I created three multimedia pieces to try to do some justice to the beauty of love and acceptance that comes with age. It is truly a privilege that I am eager to experience and earn in my lifetime.”

Created as part of the Long Memory Project, vol. 2

About the artist:

I am a non-binary artist from the Traverse City area working mostly with analog film photography and printmaking. My love for analog photography is based on feeling more connected to the camera itself and capturing more intentional moments because of the limited photos in each roll of film. Analog photography tends to suit my perspective of the unique beauty and personality of each person I am taking photos of. Printmaking is also one of my most used mediums at the moment. I make copper plate etching and aquatint prints because I enjoy the process of doing everything by hand as well as the handmade quality of my prints. I also have been learning cyanotype printing, using the sun to expose designs onto fabric and paper. I also combine analog photography and printmaking together by using photo negatives to print patches and attach them to prints or clothing to add another element to my work.
