Native Detroiter and protégé of one of the strongest eras of the Detroit jazz scene, Vincent Chandler, the trombone master, has put together an electrifying band for this Jazz Series show. Compiled of some of Detroit's most exciting, young musicians, The Vincent Chandler Experience will be blurring the lines between jazz and electric fusion in the best possible way. Although this is not Vincent's Alluvion debut (he played with the incredible octet last year at our MLK Day concert) it will truly be a fresh, bold first for this band on our stage. A do not miss!

About the artists:

VINCENT CHANDLER - TROMBONE

Vincent Chandler is a native Detroiter and protégé of one of the strongest eras of the Detroit jazz scene, having studied and/or performed with local heroes such as Donald Walden, Kenn Cox, Harold McKinney, Teddy Harris, Marcus Belgrave, Matt Michaels, Francisco Mora, Eddie Nuccilli, Wendall Harrison, Spencer Barefield, Ronald Kischuk, James Carter, Marion Hayden, Regina Carter, and Rodney Whitaker.

Chandler earned his Bachelors of Fine Arts in Music and a Masters of Music in Improvisation from the University of Michigan. He was a Graduate Student Instructor and eventually a Lecturer of Jazz Studies at the University of Michigan. He was an Instructor of Jazz Trombone and Jazz Octets at Michigan State University.

KASAN BELGRAVE - ALTO SAX

The son of late trumpet legend Marcus Belgrave, Kasan Belgrave is a multi-woodwind instrumentalist who is already leaving his mark on Detroit’s musical scene, from performance to mentorship.

He has shared the stage with many great artists such as Nicholas Payton, Barry Harris, Benny Green, Rodney Whitaker, Theo Crocker, Robert Hurst, Karriem Riggins, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and the Jazz @ Lincoln Center Orchestra w/ Wynton Marsalis. He performs frequently at the Detroit Jazz Festival, and has also performed around the globe, including a 2013 performance at the U.S. Embassy in Barbados (along with saxophonist Marcus Elliott and pianist Ian Finkelstein). In 2017, he performed a duet with the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin in her last ever live Detroit performance at the Music Hall.

Max

MAX BROWN - GUITAR

Max is a jazz guitarist based in southeast Michigan. Born and raised in Ann Arbor, Max is an alumnus of Community High School’s award-winning jazz program. After receiving a BA in Philosophy from Lawrence University, Max lived in Milwaukee where he performed with the WAMI nominated Match Stick, the hip-hop collective Ruby Yacht and his trio. As part of Ruby Yacht, Max opened for Future Islands during their 2017 North American tour. Returning to Ann Arbor in fall 2017, Max completed a Masters of Music at the University of Michigan studying under Miles Okazaki. Since re-settling in Michigan, Max has performed and/or recorded with Detroit luminaries such as Vincent Chandler, Marion Hayden, Leonard King, and Musique Noire. Additionally, Max teaches guitar privately, focusing on music theory and improvisation.

JORDAN ANDERSON - KEYS

Jordan is a Detroit-based pianist, keyboardist, organist and composer. Originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, he started playing piano at 7 and developed an instant connection to the instrument. His musical upbringing is largely defined by the funky sounds of Minneapolis, the West African music of his Cameroonian mother, and his first jazz teachers, who were Detroit-born musicians. These teachers, Solomon Parham and Kevin Washington, soon became close mentors who helped him navigate the language of Black American Music, preparing him for a subsequent years of mentorship in the city of Detroit.

Jordan was awarded his BFA in Jazz Studies at University of Michigan in Spring 2020, where he had the privilege of studying under Benny Green, Andy Milne, and Bob Hurst. In spring 2023 he received his Master’s degree in Jazz Studies at Michigan State University studying with jazz master Xavier Davis.

Onstage, he has collaborated with Rodney Whitaker, Robert Hurst, Vincent Chandler, Wendell Harrison, Karriem Riggins, Desean Jones, and Marion Hayden. He has been a featured performer at the Detroit Jazz Festival, Twin Cities Jazz Festival, Iowa City Jazz Festival, Ann Arbor Jazz Festival, and East Lansing Jazz Festival. Jordan is also featured on upcoming releases (Summer 2024) with Detroit-based groups “BIG FELLAS” and Kasan Belgrave.

TARIQ GARDNER - DRUMS

Tariq Gardner is an electrifying drummer, composer, and educator from Detroit who has his roots in Detroit’s rich and storied jazz tradition. He was brought up in the music by his mother, bassist, Marion Hayden, who greatly impacted his musical knowledge and instinct. A broad lover of music, Tariq is driven to bring the worlds of Jazz, Neo-Soul, Hip-Hop, and live instrument oriented music together in the city.

A 2018 graduate of the University of Michigan’s Jazz Studies program, Tariq has served as the Drummer for the John Douglas Quartet from 2017-19, led groups at the Charles H. Wright Museum’s African World Fest in both 2017 and 2018, has performed with the Detroit Jazz Fest All-Star Alumni Band (a three-month residency featuring pianist Cameron Graves), played at the Detroit Jazz Festival (2018-2020) and at the Cape May Jazz Festival (2019). He continues to work as a drummer, composer, and bandleader for major events in and around Detroit (including his own group the Evening Star).

BEN WOOD - BASS

Detroit based musician Ben Wood will be holding it down on bass. He is incredibly tasteful, funky, and talented as you can see on his Instagram
