“This stage can take on many forms. One of the elders transitioned after an entire career wearing masculine business formal clothing. She completely emptied out her closet & restarted with feminine business formal to continue her career in real estate. Avoiding her gender identity felt like the important choice to keep her career & wife but now, after transitioning, she still has both & gets to be completely herself. The coat showcases her discarding the clothes of her past.”

Produced as part of the Long Memory Project, vol. 2

About Elijah Nykamp:

The name of my studio storefront & process is called nykamping. It's how I consider fashion, sustainable secondhand sourcing, ethical labor pay, body positivity, and local focuses. It's creating clothing as a blanket and a comfort; an expression of self and an exclamation of support; a piece of a maker and a piece of a special place. To go nykamping is to contemplate how we communicate who we are through what we wear. Through the daily ritual of choosing which clothes to adorn our bodies, we intentionally and unintentionally tell the world and people around us what companies we support, how we feel about ourselves, and how we want others to see us. Some people shout it while others let us know through whispers, hoping to go through each day unobserved.
